I think of those times often, it was a very good time and I miss many of the guys I served with.
attempting to describe the site or some of the incidents is near to impossible...

I was stationed here during the Gulf War. I was a Nuclear Weapons Technician and looking at all those photos brings back fond memories yet makes me sad that this base is decommissioned. My husband and I drove through here a few years ago to show my sons where I worked and was saddened to see it look so different. I loved the excitement of getting a caravan of weapons and unloading them into the magazines. Loved looking at those handsome Marines up on the buildings with their rifles guarding the facility. I also enjoyed hanging out with the Blue Angels when I worked a short time in the Command Master Chief's office as his secretary, before my job opened up at Yellow Water. Great times!

I was one of those Marine guards stationed there in 1976.
I'm creating an "about me" page for my website free-six-sigma.com and I'm going to share that video on my page. Not that anyone is really interested aside from folks like us, but cecil was a part of my life and your vid and narration are great.....thanks so much, the memories came flooding back.
For the Jarheads at cecil the duty sucked! 72 hours in the compound and 24 off. Boredom was the toughest part.

1989-1989. I was stationed at Cecil and worked at R.S.S.P.S. with a bunch of good guys (I hope that I list everyone): Chief Dennis Peach, Chief Lee, Lt. "Peb" Hendrix, Roy Roach, Robert Meacham, Greg Maloof, Robert "Bob" Schumann, Tim Bowman, Richard "Richie" Jefferson, Stephanie "Steff" Swann, Wayne "Bofus" Chitham, Ken and Tom. Often I think of all of you and wish you well. Good times we had!
Our job as R.S.S.P.S. was to maintain the various security systems and secure rf communications in the compound and Avord. We very frequently tested all of these systems.
Also here are other names that I remember: Commander Brown, Lieutenant Commander Schumaker, Petty Officer Crow from Avord (what a cranky individual, lol). Major Minor, Chief Mangus.
It was somewhat unsetteling to see these pix and to know the fate of our base. It's like seeing pix of the house you were born in, destroyed but worse. The base served an important role and so did all of we over the decades to support our base's function.
Thanks to all of you who posted on this site. I have read all posts and appreciate the passing of your knowledge and experience.

I was stationed at the Marine Barracks Cecil Field from March 78-October 80. Left as one of the Corporal of the Guards. I lived in the Barracks for about a year and a half when we had no doors. We had a 3 section guard 24 on 48 off that turned into a 2 section guard 24 on 24 off, 48 on 48 off. Worked 615 post 6 & 7, 4 on 4 off. Made for some long weekends. Was on the Rifle and Pistol Team, we went to compete at the Marine Corps Matches at Camp Lejeune. Capt. Carothers left with a silver medal. Good Times. The new compound was being built during the last year I was there. I never saw it finished. I remember how cold and wet it was walking post 8 in the winter. The fog comming over the compund blocking out all the lights. Gunny Jackson was supply, we had ragged out 782 gear but he had great looking stuff in supply. Shout out to Barton "Chief" , Furlong, Allen, Joe Palmer, McCoy, McGannon, Hunnsinger, Hilson, St Amand, Gunny Koder, Capt. Fulton & Lt. Howey. Two Lieutenant colonel's during my tour. Paul Van Ripper and J Nardo. Sorry to see the place is just a memory.

I was stationed at Marine Barracks NAS Cecil Field Florida from May 1965 thru June of 1967. I served with some real men both sailors and marines . I played Basketball with the marine team as well as being tad with the navy team . Everyone called me Cat or Honcho . Major Richard Searle was the CO at the time . I never served under a finer CO . I drove a yellow GTO Pontiac Convertible with a blk top . I was there when that tragic shooting accident happened , that caused the transfer of a lot of good friends . During that tour of duty a lot of lives were changed . They had just passed the Civil Rights Bill and the lessons that i learned as a young marine at that time help mold my life . If their are any old salts from that time that remember those yellow water steak mid rats with mustard , the game room pool table shootouts along with the ping pong table ,and those P.R.T. Runs . I would like to hear from you . After the Marine Corps I served 34 years on a police department in N.J. , during this time I worked 26 years in various positions in security with a major food chain . I am now a area operations manager for abm security services . I owe my careers to the lessons I learned in the U.S.M.C. I still hear the Eagle Scream at an Anchor Clanks as the World Turns . I WAS THERE FOR 1 1/2 YRS. IN 1961 &1962 AND HAVE FOND MEMORIES. THE BARRACKS LOOKS PRETTY MUCH THE SAME, BUT A LOT OF IT MUST HAVE CHANGED OVER THE YRS. THERE WAS APPROX. 100 MARINES & 200 SAILORS.ONE END OF THE BARRACKS HOUSED THE SAILORS & THE OTHER END THE MARINES. WE RAN CONVOYS TO MAYPORT TO REARM SHIPS. I was a marine guard that escorted the many convoys to MAYPORT had a lot of good times with fellow Marines on and off base.It was full of wildlife even had some animals there, snakes which I experienced up close and personal was bitten by a pigmy rattlesnake on duty one night wild pigs were everywhere armadillos we even had a gator in the compound lived in a large drainage pipe fish and game came and took the gator to be released somewhere else. I was the LPO of the Handling crew from 78 to 80. I see by reading some of the other comments I recognize my fellow workers. This facility was nothing more than a Navy Special Weapons Site. The igloos were the old magazines and the ones close to the buildings were the new mags. I was lucky to be with the crew that moved from the old into the new. There was no trains that loaded from that site and the large asphalt pad was the helo pad. That was never used while I was there and we moved the weapons by truck over to the main side to be loaded onto aircraft for shipment. I was lucky to work with a great crew and I would like to be floating down the springs once again.
I was a sailor stationed there for two years from July 1966 to August 1968. It was great duty and a great duty station. I Googled Yellow Water to see if it had gone the way of the NAS and found this site. It brought back a lot of great memories. My buddies and I spent a lot of time in, around, and on those magazines and on convoys to Mayport. I was sorry to hear Cecil Field was closed, but time marches on.
I had two tours in Yellowater, first from 1971-74, second tour 1977-1980. I worked in Assembly Bldg 626, 617, the handling building as well as the paint booth. The compound was larger back then, the sallyport was just up the road from the Admin Office. I use to truck weapons to Mayport over the road before the start of flying them by helo. If I remember right, we would use the helo pad in the compound for loadouts to Mayport, this was in the '78-'80 time frame. The new magazines construction was a fiasco. The concrete didn't cure correctly, the mags always leaked, the rain would wash away the grass on top of them, etc, etc. The original 21 earth covered igloos were the best, stayed cool in the summer, but never could figure out why they built them on the perimeter! Made alot of friends there over the years, some guys were mainstays, like Freddie George and Ray Fontenot.
4-6-08 The sight is great you have done a good job. I was assigned to the Marine barracks from Nov 1959 to Sept. 1962. At that time it was the most modern barracks that the Marine corps had it got a write up in the Leather Neck Magazine. What a great duty station. I had a great time and met many friends. A fue years back several of us have gotten together for a small reunion. We have one coming up in a couple weeks Aprl 26th in Crandall Ga. I just learned John McCain was at cecil after his POW ordeal. 26 years ago I didn't appreciate the contribution we were making to peace, keeping the planes repaired, clean, ready to go anywhere at a moments notice. I get it now and I'm proud of my service in the navy ,at cecil field, va-86 & nimitz. It was the honor of a lifetime to serve with you all, I just didn't know it at the time.
I served aboard Cecil 88-91 and 94-97. Have very vivid memories of the base. I was there in 05 for a brief visit. What changes! But nonetheless interesting to see.
Brings back memories. We uesed the buildings at the rail terminal for a gas chamber after the place was closed for weapons storage and I was also billited there for one night with three other Marines before deployment to CAX.

I was stationed at NAS Cecil Field from 1976-1979. I was assigned to VA-174 for A7E Familarization school.At the completion of school got my orders to VA-87, but got to stay back since they were in doing a Med cruise at that time.Worked the weekend shift in the Airframes shop with VA-174 until my squadron came back. Had a great time.Met many good people. I had some of my best times there.
I was a Marine Guard there in 1989 when a good man and friend to everyone, Kevin Ahern, was killed in an accident while on duty. Kevin was well liked by every Marine in the unit. God bless Kev, you're still on our minds and in out hearts!

Great pictures, I was stationed at the weapons department prior to being discharged from the Navy in June '75. While at the weapons department I worked the night shift four nights a week as the assistant weapons duty officer. Mostly quiet but we did have an occasional hair raising late night incident. Thanks for the site. I served on the Marine side from 1978 to 1980, before going Fleet. A lot of memoirs bring good and bad times. Thank you for this great website! It brings back a lot of good memories. "Yellow Water" was my 1st duty assignment (6/63 - 7/65) following my Navy NuWeps training. Truly, it was my privilege to serve there with Navy and Marine officers and men of the highest caliber. Daily routine was “shifting” into work-uniforms and eating “chow” before boarding a 10-ton canopy-covered truck that would take the Navy crews to the compound, where we off-loaded for security badge exchange and processing, i.e.: squids and jar-heads verbally jousting (the Marines had guns, so they nearly always had the last word), then off to the "plant" for weps maintenance activities. We also had a duty “Fire Brigade” as a first-response in the case of pinewoods-grass fires that often threatened the surrounding area. Picture this: a spontaneous ignited swamp fire quickly burning a large circular pattern that is forcing all manner of critters to flee outward, while a the same time, a small surrounding contingent of sailors with shovels and rubber flame-beaters in hand are rushing inward to save the day. The resulting collision was always exciting. W. C. "Robby" Robinson - USN (Retired) FYI – The railroad was used during WWII to tow ground targets on flatcars for strafing practice by Navy and USMC aircraft. In some areas of Yellow Water, any square foot of ground would yield some remnant of 20 mm or 50 cal. spent rounds.
What a surprise to find this website and kind of a sadness to see the base as it is now. When I arrived there in October 1959 everything was brand new, bunks never slept in before, all tools in the compound were new. A group of us Navy personnel went to a pre commissioning school in Norfolk Va. to start a new base and then to Yellow Water. I was stationed there until July 1962. I was assigned to NMYW in Oct '59, after completing Special Weapons school in Albuquerque and Pre-commissioning training at NWTCLANT in Norfolk. I had just graduated from ET Class "B" School at TI, and they didn't know how much travel pay to allow, since nobody was able to find Yellowwater on a map. They took a guess and paid me to NAS Cecil Field; turns out tht was pretty close. I left NMYW in May, '62 to go to sub school. It was a memorable tour. I remember standing on the loading dock outside the instrument shop and watching a couple of the first space shots go up from Canaveral. What a friend he was to all. Taking him home to his parents in New Hampshire is still fresh in my mind. God bless his parents they were two of the strongest people I ever met. I lived there for 4 years as my dad worked "across the street" (Normandy). He was CDR of Weapons Dept from 80-84.His retirement was held in the parking lot "across the street" across from the Marine Barracks. I loved Cecil! Your pictures have brought back so many memories. I would really like to find and/or talk to someone that was there during this time. Dad passed away in 90 from lung cancer and today 1/22 is his Bday. (& as far as chemicals that cause lung cancer, if "you" smoked at all that case was null and void. Agent Orange was on my dads paperwork but because he smoked it cancled the ability to persue anything.) He had a memorial there and I was told they moved it to Pensacola, can anyone remember that? Dad's name is CDR Judson J. Hendricks.

I was the supply admin clerk from late 69 into 1970. I have great memories there. We had a couple of Navy ordnance chiefs next to us. They had a pet squirrel and would sometimes rig blasting caps up to surprise us. The C/O, a major, played tennis with the XO (and Schneider - our trumpeter) on a court outside the barracks... what was the guys name who rode in the back of the pick-up car while we were running the pft through the woods? To bad there isn't nothing mentioned about the Marines who were stationed there. I was there from 1990 to 1992. We escorted to mayport by helo when we did those moves.
I was at Marine Barracks 1982-1986. What a time I had at the Barracks. Met alot of good Marines. Things really changed and it is kinda sad not having a Weapons detachment. Also sad that hardly anything was mentioned about the other duties other than the weapons. Like 9-0, post one, and extra stuff like parades and Honor Guard.

There was a tragedy that occured in the guard house. Love to talk to anyone who was there and remembers the incident. I was Sgt. of the Guard at the time of the incident. Just outside of the ADT room. All those who were there will remeber just where that is located.There were no trees at the time in the compound and there was a sentury tower located so the whole area could be observed. Remember the roving patrols and the "mid rats".The ultimate in security. Also, the Sat and Alert teams.

Hi Nice work but and I will say that you are brave to walk in in that storage facility , I will be sceared of the leftover crap !! like I don't want to glow-in-the-dark LOL ! anyway ..I was looking around surfing thr net and I found out that Civil Defense "Air raid" sirens were placed recently in NJ not long time ago , we are talking days here not months ..!! so I was looking in to it and this is how I got into your site by the way (: I was surprised because those "Air raid" sirens are an early warning for nuclear attack and they have no business for being there ; the reason is that there is no natural disaster i.e. tornados or any hurricanes or massive floods , so it makes us wonder actually to start tying things with the current events that are taking place around the world . Are we heading back to the old days of the 50s and early 40s ?

My brother Demetrio H. Nunez was stationed in Cecil Field in 1979. He also was hit and killed on impact by a car driven by a drugged and drunken soldier which was let on the base in his condition. Unfortunately instead being courtmartialed and put in jail. He was only given a general discharge. So I really dont have anything good to say about this base.

Hello, Although retired Air Force, i grew up on Cecil Field and always wondered where the road led on the other side of Normandy Blvd. As a history buff, i am not only interested in the weapons storage area, but am really looking for info about the Naval Air Gunners School that took up the majority of area between Normanday Blvd. and I-10 to the north. Especially any descriptions or pictures of the ranges/facilities from the 50s and 60s. The place is huge and i love exploring what's left on foot. Side note. I was showing my wife some of the igloos on the outer perimeter of the WSA this past weekend after the airshow and drove up on one of the largest cottonmouths i have ever seen in the middle of the road. Was at NAS Cecil Field from Dec,1960 till Dec,196l and was with the Crash-Rescue Division or Crash Dision,there where some great times at that base plus my Crash Crew,we spent many hours out on the runway and I just saw some photos of the base and too see it like that,it was a great base,again thanks for reliving the good old days at Cecil Field.
Wow I can't believe I came across this site. I think about my time spent at Yellow Water all of the time , These posts really bring back alot of memories. I was at the Marine Barracks from Dec 1979 - July 1982. I remember alot of crazy times in the pound and guys like Gunny Nelson, SSGT Franklin, SGT Green and Jennings. I was stationed in yellow water from 1964 to 1968 resided on yellow water and worked at station weapons crew. Ran the pistol range for a few years and fondly remember those days. remember the ride to work on a two ton truck each morning after a good breakfast at the yellow water galley then off to see chief edmonds at station weapons and work for the day and yes I remember the convoys and boxcar loads of ordnance and special weapons off loads after a ship came into mayport. what an experience and I also recall downloading quite a few aircraft that bingoed to cecil field. thanks for the photos and memeries. I would be considered a Plank Owner for Yellow Water. In 1959 I was at the receiving Station in Philadelphia for a month waiting for a Secret security clearance to go to Yelow Water. No one at Philly knew anything about Yellow Water except one individual just being transfered from Cecil Field and all he knew was that it was a new base across the road. When I took a cab from the Jacksonville airport to downtown Jacksonville the cab driver told all about the base. This was in Sept.1959. The base construction was not totally complete but there were some personel living on base. I was the fifth Naval person to move in. There were some Marine personel moved in. The mess hall was not open and we had to go to Cecil field to eat. I was a CN(Construction Man and assigned to Public Works. The base was Commisioned in late 59 or early 60 and have a photo of Public Works during the Commissioning. At this time Yellow Water was a separate Command. Don't rember the name of the CO but do remember that he had his own privte plane and kept it at a small airport down the road. The name of the Executive Officer was LCDR V. Fedorowicz and I know that because he signed a certificate peomoting me to Surveyor Third Class. I transfered from Yellow Water to MCB 7 in late 1960. In late 1961 I was flying MATS from Gitmo to Norfolk and we made a stop at Cecil Field and heard that Yellow Water had come under the command of Cecil Field. In landing at Cecil I did take a couple of picuures of Yellow Water. I would be interested in hearing from anone who served at Yellow Water in 1959 & 1960. Michael Marlow mmarlowrrsv@att.net

Thank you for keeping the memories alive for those of us who were stationed at Yellow Water. I was an AO3 stationed at NAS Cecil Field in the Weapons Department from Feb 69 - Feb 71 and lived at the Navy end of the barracks. I was assigned to the Air Missile Division. I have some great memories there since it was my first duty station. I played tennis in my off hours and my doubles partner for many matches was the CO of the Marine Barracks as well as the XO. I think the CO's name was Maj Sanford. The XO was a Captain (I can't remember his name) but he had an old VW bug that he restored (1949 I think). I ran into the Captain a couple of years later (Jul 72) walking down a street in Hong Kong (small world). I was stationed aboard the USS Kitty Hawk CVA-63 at the time. When I stood watch I was assigned to perform maintence checks within the compound and had to check the security of all of the magazine locks. I was at Cecil Field from Sep 76 to Feb 80. Marvin I rember you well. I spent 12 years in the Corp. Cecil Field was some of the worst times, but yet some of the best. I'm sorry to hear about Benson. He was a great guy. I remember attending his wedding. 30 years is a long time. I remember A lot of peopl and we were all family. I don't think most people would understand the bond all of us had, whether we were friends or not. Unfortunately as time goes by you don't remember everyone. I remember guys like Dunoff, Juen, Medlock, McCoy. All good guys. There's so may guys I wish I still had contact with, Like Ed Knowlton, Randy Holly, Frank Black (one of my best friends), Phil Bowers, John Nygoski, Romeo Nelson, Rusty Bailes, and Hamilton. So many more Like Alan Kennedy and Phillip Ray who helped me get started with my short lived comedy carreer. I aways think about Nunez this time of year. He was a good friend and Marine. As a very young Air conditioning technician ,my company had a contract to install a/c in the guard house. I'll never forget ,because the soldiers were running a drill and we all had to lie face down with guns pointed at us. Needles to say It scared me to death ! This was probably around 1975

i was sent to marine barracks cecil field from camp lejune in june of 1971. i spent the next three years there,working up to sgt.of the guard. while there maj.powell was the co. this was the best duty station in the corps. i helpd paid for the pool,(office hours for reading a book while on duty at post 2,entrance to the compond). i was the quarterback of our football team and enjoyed kicking vp174's butt and also vp82,(i think). i had many good times and great friends. i spent many nights flanking the mags,(not really,never made it more than three mags from the tower.most of the time when it was cold we went in the tower,it had heater. flanking 626 sucked. i got out in april of 1974. i worked for 32 years with the orange park police dep.after i got out. i never left the area. i to miss yellow water. it was a great place to be a marne. cpl.jtrosepiler

I was a Navy Photographers Mate back in the mid 70's attached to the Cecil Field photo lab. We would do monthly construction progress photo's for the Navy Works Facility. On one of the trips I was escorted by the Navy Works employee to take pictures of new construction in the compound. We were ordered to park and wait while a Semi Truck finished being check in through the double gates. I thought it was strange that a Chevy Suburban was in front and in back of the big rig. We waited for at least 45 minutes before the convoy reached it's bunker and we were cleard to go to our photo destination. As we drove by I could see a flurry of activity and could see men taking out large Haliburton cases from the Suburbans. They were rather long and looked long enough to hold rifles. Years later after I become a civilian again CBS 60 Minutes had a profile of how Nuclear Weapons are transported around the country. The showed exactly what I had witnessed that day taking construction progress photo's. The CBS report was clear to say that sometimes the convoys carried no weapons, and practiced there routine for real shipments and at times these were also decoy operations. I also was also attached to VA-87 between 1976 and 1979. After Completion of A school and A-7 familiarization school @,Plane Captain training @ VA-174.Then I was put on barracks and grounds clean up till the Squadron returned from the 76 Med Cruise. Then I was then put on Barracks detail and ship detail for about a year.I never had to be a Plane Captain -then went directly to the Power Plant shop then was a flight deck Troubleshooter. Best Cruise was the South American Cruise for the 1976 Bicentennial. Like to contact the previous submitter the was attached to VA-87 the same time that I was attached.
I spent three tours of duty at Cecil Field Weapons, 71-75, 77-79 and 92-95. It was the best duty I had during my 27 years in the Navy. I had the task of putting the lock on the gate , as the warrant officer in charge, when it was shut down. That was not a pleasant day. I will always have great memories of my duty there and the people that I served with.

One thing I will never forget about Yellow Water was a November day the "Plant" people were having an authorized beer party in the boondocks of Yellow Water. It must have been an official party because many of our Officers were there.I think it was a GMT2 named Yaegley that had a 1959 white chevy impala with the top down and the radio blasting away. Our merriment was interupted when over the radio came the message that our President had been shot. Boy, talk about instant sobriety! One of those things a man will never forget.

I was at Cecil Field from 1963 to 1964 fresh out of Boot Camp. I was an SA but because I could type they sent me to work in the GMTO passed the E-4 exam before going to a Tin Can out of Mayport. Ron Bereman
I was stationed at Cecil straight out of my A school (in Millington). As was customary, they sent me on TAD to the Galley. I was fortunate enough to get chosen to support the Yellow Water marines. During that time, late '89, their mess hall was being reworked and the cooks made all the food on the Cecil side and my job was to drive it across the road in a truck. I remember getting to make omelets for them in the morning and bringing the food back & forth... food to... empty dishes back. Have to say, that was some of my best time in the Navy. I remember it being December and it snowed in Jacksonville. The other guy who drove while I was on leave ended up putting the truck in a ditch right outside the guard post. Have to say, I always wondered what went on there... never went past the barracks.
I was at the Marine Barracks from 1985 to 1987. Ran arcoss this site brings back some memories. Does anybody rember post 5A. That was the nick name they gave my mole. I hung out with guys named Barnard, Rice, Spreaker to name a few.
I was stationed at NAS Cecil Field 2x Sep 1983 to Aug 1986 and May 1990 to July 1993. It was crazy to see that all the buildings are gone and only 2 magazines are left standing. Your web site is fantastic keep up the good work
I did time at both Jax and Cecil (THE BURN CENTER) from '82-'86. I do remember some of the good times as well as the bad ones, from the convoys to the transporting of @#%^&* to and from the compound and the after game refreshments that COL. Shockey provided for us but, it's been a long time sense I've been back up that way only being 90 minutes away. I hope to get back there soon, maybe some of you will too. I am Guy Clemons WTC(AW) Ret. Iwas stationed there 1983-1986 was a GMT2 then. Was again there 1990-1993 Made WTC then. Loved my time there. Worked for CDR Floyd English, WTCM Frank Reinertsen. Thanks for this web site. I was also a member of the commissioning party of USNM Yellow Water although my quarters were in the other half of the barracks. The Photos bring back many fond memories of my time there. I could tell many stories of many happenings that occurred both on the base and the convoys between the base and Mayport as I was for the most part the voice behind the radio when you were transporting munitions.
