"With great sadness, the Board of Directors of the Jacksonville Firemen’s Credit
Union announces the passing on July 7, 2022 of Thomas (Tommy) L. Smith, Jr.
former President of the Jacksonville Firemen’s Credit Union. Tommy was known for
his quiet effectiveness, leadership, smile, helpful attitude, loyalty and
integrity.
Tommy was born on June 5, 1944, he attended local schools and served his Country
as a Member of the United States Army. Tommy followed his father into the
Jacksonville Fire Department on November 5, 1965, retiring as a Lieutenant
assigned to Station 10 after 26 years of service on January 4, 1992. During his
career Tommy served on Engine and Ladder Companies, Chief’s Aide and numerous
special project assignments at Fire Headquarters. Tommy was an outstanding
player on the Fire Department Softball Team for many years. He was elected to
several terms on the Police and Fire Pension Advisory Committee.
During a majority of his Fire Service career Tommy was employed at the Credit
Union, rising through the administrative ranks from teller, bookkeeper,
comptroller, Assistant Manager, Manager, Board of Directors Member and President
of the Jacksonville Firemen’s Credit Union. During his tenure, we went from the
pen and pencil era to electronic banking; broadening our menu of services to our
members to include boat, recreational vehicle, motorcycle and watercraft loans;
introduced both checking accounts and credit cards; initiated real estate
mortgage program and other financial services advances.
For the past several years, Tommy has endured a number of health issues. He is
survived by 2 sons, Retired District Chief Brad Smith and Bart Smith, 2
grandchildren. Tommy will be remembered by hundreds of active and retired
members who worked with him. If you had a problem, Tommy would always seek a
solution to help you.
Service information will be announced later. He is now pain free and at Peace."
In response to several inquires we announced that per Tommy's wishes no funeral services will be held and his interment will be a private family remembrance. Your Board of Directors ask that you remember Tommy's service to the citizens of our community as a firefighter and his service to the men and women of the department by his work at the Jacksonville Fireman's Credit Union and as a member of the Police and Fire Pension Advisory Committee. And please continue to keep his family members and friends in your thoughts and prayers. May you rest In peace Tommy.
